Case Studies > Data Centre Cooling
Overview
A central London based prestige consultancy approached TES to supply a solution in order to provide a new UK based data centre for the New York Stock Exchange with emergency cooling. A total of 22 systems each capable of satisfying a load of 1.8MW for 10 minutes was required. This 10 minute interval would allow the data centres emergency generators to start up, thus providing an uninterrupted supply of cooling medium to the densly populated data halls. An innovative and energy efficient solution was required for this prestige project.

The Solution
Working closely with the client, TES designed the entire emergency cooling system for the data centre and will continue to supply the equipment in batches throughout several phases of the project. This equipment includes 22 Pump / Heat Exchanger / Controls Skids, 22 Ice Banks of 24000 litre Capacity, 6 Ice Build Chillers. TES will also provide the project management expertise in order to facilitate a smooth running production, delivery, installation and commissioning process.

Outcome
TES has completed the first 6 systems and is now working closely with the client on a number of other high profile projects both in the UK and overseas.

Technical Details
Ice is built and stored in large holding tanks using chillers providing chilled water / glycol at -5ºC. A skid mounted Heat Exchanger provides the interface between the melted ice water from the tank and the customers water / glycol cooling system. When emergency cooling is required, pumps circulate the melted ice water through the heat exchanger satisfying the customers 1.8MW load (per system) for 10 minutes. There are 22 systems employed in the data centre.
