Overview
One of the newly formed Ambulance Trusts approached TES for cooling assistance in their new ambulance control room data hall.

The requirements were to provide 80kW of continuous cooling to new servers. These powerful servers are providing operational control of the ambulances throughout Essex and surrounding areas, in addition to this the data centre piloted the introduction of Airwave Digital Radio which is being implemented as a government initiative across all emergency services thought England. The room also houses servers for NHS Direct who provide patient information thought the Eastern region, and still has capacity for future expansion.
The installation comprised a pair of duty and standby air cooled chillers capable of dissipating 105kW each, with duty and standby pumps providing failsafe operation 24/7.

The chillers were installed and coupled to coolers mounted within the server cabinets, these re-circulate cooled air amongst the many high density blade servers allowing optimum performance.

All interconnecting pipe work was installed in an underground air tight duct which was fitted with a leak detection system.

The chillers were fitted with GSM kits to warn of any faults immediately. These units automatically dial an engineer and fax advice of fault in the event of any problems. This coupled to a service contract with a national refrigeration service company with a facility locally, allows an engineer to be on site with the appropriate parts very quickly.

The site is adjacent to an acute hospital and residential accommodation, as such, noise level was a sensitive issue. Ultra low noise chillers were selected with a noise level of only 51 decibels at 10 metres.
